Where Is Ninh Binh?
Ninh Binh is a province in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. Ninh Binh city, the provincial centre, lies about 95 km south of Hanoi by road. The trip from Hanoi takes around 2 hours by train, bus or car, which makes Ninh Binh one of the easiest side trips from the capital.
Ninh Binh is located in Vietnam between Hanoi to the north and Thanh Hoa to the south, with a short coastline on the East Sea. The landscape changes quickly as you drive south from Hanoi. Flat rice fields give way to steep limestone peaks, rivers and caves, which is why Ninh Binh is often added to itineraries that also include Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Sapa.
Since 2025, Ninh Binh has also been a much larger province. Under Resolution 202/2025/QH15 of the National Assembly, the provinces of Ha Nam, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh were merged into a new province that keeps the name Ninh Binh. The new Ninh Binh province covers 3,942.62 km² and has a population of 4,412,264 people, and Ninh Binh city remains the administrative centre.
For travellers, the merger changes very little. Trang An, Tam Coc, Hang Mua and the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital are still clustered in the area of the old Ninh Binh province, all within 10 km of each other. Ninh Binh Station is about 8 km from Trang An and about 6 km from Tam Coc, so a short taxi ride connects the train to most hotels. The main change you may notice is new ward and commune names on maps and hotel addresses.
What Is Ninh Binh Famous For?
Ninh Binh is known for dramatic limestone scenery, boat trips through flooded caves and some of the oldest historic sites in Vietnam. These are the things that draw most visitors to Ninh Binh:

Rowing boats leave the Trang An pier for the cave route through the UNESCO-listed landscape.
- Limestone karsts. Steep green peaks rise straight out of rice fields and rivers, so Ninh Binh is often called “Ha Long Bay on land”.
- Trang An Landscape Complex. UNESCO listed Trang An as a mixed cultural and natural World Heritage Site in 2014. A boat trip through Trang An passes under several caves and stops at riverside temples.
- Tam Coc boat ride. Local rowers, many of whom row with their feet, take you along the Ngo Dong River through three caves and past rice fields.
- Hang Mua (Mua Cave viewpoint). Close to 500 stone steps lead to a dragon statue at the top, with a wide view over Tam Coc.
- Bai Dinh Pagoda. Bai Dinh is one of the largest Buddhist complexes in Vietnam, with long corridors of stone arhat statues and a large bronze Buddha.
- Hoa Lu Ancient Capital. Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam under the Dinh and early Le dynasties. Temples to King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh still stand there.
- Phat Diem Cathedral. Phat Diem Cathedral was built in the late 19th century from stone and ironwood, in a style that mixes Vietnamese pagoda roofs with European church design.
- Kong: Skull Island film location. Parts of the 2017 film Kong: Skull Island were filmed in Trang An and Tam Coc, and a film set village still stands in Trang An.
- Mountain goat and crispy rice. Ninh Binh’s signature dishes are mountain goat (de nui) and crispy rice (com chay), which you will find on nearly every local menu.

Is Ninh Binh Worth Visiting?
Ninh Binh is worth visiting for most travellers in northern Vietnam, especially those who have only a few days outside Hanoi. Three reasons stand out:
- Scenery that is easy to reach. You can be on a boat among limestone peaks about 3 hours after leaving Hanoi.
- Culture and nature in one place. UNESCO-listed landscapes, an ancient capital and large pagodas are all within a short ride of each other.
- Good value. Train tickets, homestays and local food in Ninh Binh cost much less than a Ha Long Bay cruise.

In Ninh Binh, temples, rivers and limestone hills sit within a short ride of each other.
One thing to weigh up: the Trang An and Tam Coc boat trips look quite similar. If your time is short, pick one and spend the rest of the day at Hang Mua or Hoa Lu. Our guide on whether Ninh Binh is worth visiting compares Ninh Binh with Ha Long Bay in more detail.

- September to October: Temperatures are mild, skies are clearer and rain eases after the summer peak.

The rice fields along the Ngo Dong River in Tam Coc turn golden from late May to early June.

What to Eat in Ninh Binh

Is Ninh Binh Safe?
Ninh Binh is generally safe for travellers, including solo and female travellers. Violent crime against visitors is rare. The main risks are small overcharges at busy sights and traffic on rural roads.
These are the situations visitors mention most often, with a simple way to handle each one:
- Tip requests on boat trips. Some rowers ask for a tip or try to sell drinks during the ride. Tipping is optional. If you want to tip, around 20.000VND to 50.000VND per boat is common, and you can politely decline any sales.
- Unofficial parking attendants. At roadside spots without a sign, someone may ask a high fee to “watch” your bike. Use marked parking at the entrance of each sight and ask the price before you hand over the keys.
- Unofficial ticket sellers. People near the piers may offer “tickets” or tours. Buy tickets only at the official ticket office of each site. In 2026, the Trang An boat ticket is 300.000VND per adult, and the Hang Mua entry ticket is 150.000VND, according to Ninh Binh Tourism.
- Children selling items at Hang Mua. Children or vendors may follow you on the path with postcards or drinks. A friendly “no, thank you” usually ends it.
A few general habits help: agree on prices before any ride or service, carry small notes, and wear a helmet on a scooter. Treat these as small hassles rather than reasons to worry.
How Touristy Is Ninh Binh?
Ninh Binh is busy at the big-name sights and calm almost everywhere else. Trang An and Tam Coc get crowded at weekends, during Vietnamese public holidays and during the golden rice season from late May to June. The Hang Mua steps also get busy around sunset.

The stone steps to the Hang Mua viewpoint get busiest in the hour before sunset.
For a quieter experience, try Van Long Nature Reserve, Thung Nham Bird Park or Kenh Ga floating village. If you want to see Trang An or Tam Coc, arrive at the boat pier when it opens in the morning. Tour groups from Hanoi usually arrive after 10:00.
