The best things to do in Ninh Binh are a boat trip through Trang An or Tam Coc, the climb up Mua Cave for the view over the rice fields, a visit to Bai Dinh Pagoda and the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, and a bike ride through the Tam Coc countryside. This guide on what to do in Ninh Binh covers 15 sights, each with the time you need, the 2026 ticket price, the distance from Ninh Binh Railway Station and a short “Skip if” note. Ninh Binh Province also became much larger in 2025, after Ha Nam and Nam Dinh merged into it, so the list now includes Tam Chuc Pagoda, Tran Temple and Xuan Thuy National Park. Must-Do Boat Trips in Ninh Binh
A boat trip is the one thing you should not miss in Ninh Binh. Women and men from the local villages row flat boats along rivers that run between limestone peaks and straight through low caves. Most first-time visitors only have time for one boat trip, so the comparison table below helps you pick.
1. Trang An Boat Tour (UNESCO)

Trang An is the core of the Trang An Landscape Complex, which UNESCO listed as a World Heritage Site in 2014 for both its karst scenery and its archaeological value. The Trang An boat tour takes you through 9 to 12 caves, past riverside temples and into hidden valleys, depending on which of the 3 routes you choose. Route 1 has the most caves, Route 2 passes the temple areas, and Route 3 visits the film set built for Kong: Skull Island. The Trang An pier is large and well organised, and each boat takes up to 4 people. Arrive before 9 a.m. to avoid tour groups from Hanoi, which usually reach Trang An between 10 a.m. and noon.
⏱ Time needed: 2.5 to 3 hours
🎟 Ticket: 300.000VND (boat and entry included)
🕗 Opening hours: around 7:00 to 16:00
📍 Distance: about 7 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station
Skip if you have already booked Tam Coc and only have one day. The scenery is similar.
2. Tam Coc Boat Ride

The Tam Coc boat ride follows the Ngo Dong River through 3 caves (Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Ba) and between rice fields that turn bright green in spring and golden in late May and early June. The Tam Coc route is shorter and flatter than Trang An, and the rowers often use their feet to push the oars. Tam Coc village has many cafés and homestays, so it is the most popular base in Ninh Binh. Rowers often ask for a tip near the end of the trip and some boats bring along vendors selling snacks. A fair tip is 50.000VND to 100.000VND per boat. You do not have to buy anything from the floating vendors.
⏱ Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
🎟 Ticket: 250.000VND (350.000VND with the electric shuttle)
🕗 Opening hours: around 7:00 to 16:30
📍 Distance: about 7 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station
Skip if you dislike being asked for tips or you are visiting on a weekend in peak season, when the Tam Coc river gets crowded.
Trang An vs Tam Coc: Which One Should You Choose?
Trang An and Tam Coc share the same karst landscape, so most travellers with only one day in Ninh Binh should choose one boat trip, not both.
| Trang An | Tam Coc | |
|---|---|---|
| Scenery | More caves (9 to 12), temples, wide valleys | 3 caves, rice fields along the river |
| Crowds | Busy, but the large pier spreads boats out | Very busy on weekends, narrower river |
| Ticket price | 300.000VND | 250.000VND |
| Boat time | 2.5 to 3 hours | 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Tipping pressure | Low | Higher |
| Best for | First-timers who want the UNESCO highlight | Travellers staying in Tam Coc, rice-field photos |
Our pick: choose Trang An if you only do one boat trip. Choose Tam Coc if you are staying in Tam Coc village or travelling in late May and early June, when the rice is ready for harvest.
3. Van Long Nature Reserve

Van Long Nature Reserve is a wetland where small bamboo boats glide across calm, shallow water below limestone cliffs. Van Long sees far fewer visitors than Trang An or Tam Coc, and the boat trip is short and quiet. Van Long is also home to the Delacour’s langur, a critically endangered primate. Bring binoculars and look at the cliff faces in the early morning.
⏱ Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours
🎟 Ticket: 100.000VND
🕗 Opening hours: around 7:00 to 17:00
📍 Distance: about 20 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station
Skip if you want caves. The Van Long boat route is mostly open water.
Must-See Viewpoints and Caves in Ninh Binh
4. Climb Mua Cave (Hang Mua)

Mua Cave is the classic Ninh Binh viewpoint. A stone staircase of nearly 500 steps climbs to a stone dragon on the summit, and the top looks over the Ngo Dong River, the Tam Coc rice fields and the karst peaks that roll toward Trang An. The cave at the foot of the mountain is small, so the climb is the real reason to come. Go before 9 a.m. for soft light and fewer people, or about an hour before sunset. The steps are steep and narrow near the top, so wear proper shoes and carry water.
How long does it take to climb Mua Cave steps? Most people with average fitness reach the top of Mua Cave in 20 to 30 minutes, with a few stops for photos. Coming down takes about 15 minutes.
On the road to Mua Cave, some people wave motorbikes into private lots and claim that parking is compulsory. Ride on to the official car park at the ticket gate.
⏱ Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours
🎟 Ticket: 150.000VND
🕗 Opening hours: around 6:00 to 19:00
📍 Distance: about 6 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station, 2 km from Tam Coc
Skip if you have knee problems or the day is very hot. The midday climb is tiring.
5. Thien Ha Cave or Thung Nham Bird Park

Thien Ha Cave and Thung Nham Bird Park sit in the same valley west of Tam Coc, so combine them or pick one. Thien Ha Cave is a long, lit cave that you walk through before a boat takes you along a quiet valley. Thung Nham is an eco-park where thousands of egrets and herons fly back to roost around 5 p.m. Thung Nham suits families, while Thien Ha suits people who want a cave without the Trang An crowds.
⏱ Time needed: 2 to 3 hours
🎟 Ticket: Thien Ha from 150.000VND (walking route), Thung Nham 250.000VND
🕗 Opening hours: around 7:00 to 17:30
📍 Distance: about 12 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station
Skip if you already did the Trang An boat tour and have less than 2 days.
Temples and History
6. Bai Dinh Pagoda

Bai Dinh Pagoda is one of the largest Buddhist complexes in Vietnam. The new Bai Dinh complex has a long corridor lined with 500 stone arhat statues, large bronze Buddhas and the 13-storey Bao Thien Tower, while the old Bai Dinh pagoda sits in a cave higher up the hill. Entry to Bai Dinh is free, but the car park is about 3 km from the main gate, so most visitors take the electric car. Dress with shoulders and knees covered.
⏱ Time needed: 3 to 4 hours
🎟 Ticket: Free entry. Electric car 150.000VND return, or 300.000VND for the package with the Bao Thien Tower and the shuttle between areas
🕗 Opening hours: around 6:00 to 18:00
📍 Distance: about 17 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station

Skip if you are not interested in temples. Bai Dinh is huge and mostly modern, built from 2003.
7. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam from 968 to 1010, under the Dinh and Early Le dynasties, before the court moved to Thang Long (Hanoi). The two temples to King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh are the main sights, with carved stone and wood and a quiet setting between the mountains. Hoa Lu is small and cheap, and it sits on the road between Trang An and Bai Dinh, so it is easy to add.
⏱ Time needed: 1 hour
🎟 Ticket: 20.000VND
🕗 Opening hours: around 7:00 to 18:00
📍 Distance: about 8 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station
Skip if you are short on time. Hoa Lu is the easiest sight to drop from a one-day plan.
8. Bich Dong Pagoda

Bich Dong Pagoda is a set of 3 small pagodas built into a limestone mountain, linked by stone steps and a cave. Bich Dong is about 2 km from the Tam Coc pier along a flat road through the rice fields, so it makes a perfect short bike ride. Bich Dong is much quieter than Bai Dinh and has a more traditional feel.
⏱ Time needed: 1 hour
🎟 Ticket: Free when you arrive by road
🕗 Opening hours: around 7:00 to 17:00
📍 Distance: about 9 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station, 2 km from Tam Coc
Skip if you cannot manage steps. The upper pagoda is a short but steep climb.
9. Phat Diem Stone Cathedral

Phat Diem Cathedral is a stone and wood Catholic church built between 1875 and 1899 that mixes Vietnamese pagoda roofs with a European church layout. The bell tower, the stone carvings and the huge ironwood columns make Phat Diem unlike any other church in Vietnam. Phat Diem is at its most beautiful at Christmas, when the town of Kim Son lights up and thousands of people come for midnight mass.
⏱ Time needed: 1.5 hours
🎟 Ticket: Free
🕗 Opening hours: daytime, outside mass times
📍 Distance: about 30 km from Ninh Binh city centre
Skip if you only have one day. Phat Diem is out of the way from the Tam Coc and Trang An area.
Nature and Outdoor Activities
10. Cycle Through the Tam Coc Rice Fields

Cycling is the best way to see the villages between the main sights in Ninh Binh. Most homestays in Tam Coc rent bicycles for a small daily fee. A good loop starts in Tam Coc village, goes to Bich Dong Pagoda, comes back past Mua Cave and continues along the quiet lanes toward Trang An. The whole loop is mostly flat and takes about half a day with stops. The rice fields look their best from April to early June. See the best time to visit Ninh Binh for the month-by-month details.
⏱ Time needed: half a day
🎟 Ticket: Bike rental only
🕗 Best time: early morning or after 15:30
📍 Start point: Tam Coc village, about 7 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station
Skip if you travel in June to August at midday. The heat is intense.
11. Cuc Phuong National Park

Cuc Phuong is the oldest national park in Vietnam, founded in 1962. The Cuc Phuong forest has 1,000-year-old trees, caves and jungle trails. The Endangered Primate Rescue Center (EPRC) at the park entrance cares for rescued langurs and gibbons, and the Cuc Phuong conservation packages include the rescue centres. Stay one night to join the evening electric car tour, when you may see wildlife and, in spring, fireflies.
⏱ Time needed: 1 to 2 days
🎟 Ticket: 60.000VND entry. Conservation package from 220.000VND
🕗 Opening hours: around 7:00 to 17:00, night tours by booking
📍 Distance: about 45 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station
Skip if you have less than 2 days in Ninh Binh. The drive takes over an hour each way.
12. Kenh Ga Floating Village

Kenh Ga is a village on the Hoang Long River where houses sit on the water and boats are the main way to get around. The Kenh Ga boat trip shows daily life in Ninh Binh: fishing, children rowing to school and floating fish farms. Some trips continue to Van Trinh Cave, a short walk from the river. Kenh Ga is a quiet option for travellers who find Tam Coc too touristy.
⏱ Time needed: 2 hours
🎟 Ticket: boat hire paid at the Kenh Ga pier
🕗 Opening hours: daytime
📍 Distance: about 20 km from Ninh Binh Railway Station
Skip if you want dramatic karst scenery. Kenh Ga is about village life.
New in Ninh Binh: Sights Added After the 2025 Province Merger

Each one below works best as a half-day or day trip from Ninh Binh city. Read more about the new province in our Ninh Binh travel guide.
13. Tam Chuc Pagoda

Tam Chuc Pagoda is a large modern Buddhist complex in former Ha Nam, built around a lake with limestone peaks behind it. Visitors cross the Tam Chuc lake by boat or ride an electric car between the main halls. Tam Chuc is quieter than Bai Dinh outside the Lunar New Year festival season.
⏱ Time needed: half a day
🎟 Ticket: free entry, transport packages from 200.000VND
🕗 Opening hours: around 6:00 to 18:00
📍 Distance: about 40 km from Trang An
Skip if you have already visited Bai Dinh on the same trip. Best as a half-day or day trip from Ninh Binh city.
14. Tran Temple (Nam Dinh)

Tran Temple in former Nam Dinh honours the kings of the Tran dynasty, who ruled Vietnam from 1225 to 1400. Tran Temple is famous for the seal-opening ceremony on the night of the 14th day of the first lunar month, when huge crowds gather for good fortune. On other days, Tran Temple is calm and easy to visit.
⏱ Time needed: 1.5 hours
🎟 Ticket: Free
🕗 Opening hours: around 6:30 to 18:00
📍 Distance: about 30 km from Ninh Binh city
Skip if you dislike crowds and are visiting during the Lunar New Year festival. Best as a half-day or day trip from Ninh Binh city.
15. Xuan Thuy National Park

Xuan Thuy National Park protects mangroves and mudflats at the mouth of the Red River. In 1989, Xuan Thuy became the first Ramsar wetland in Vietnam, and Xuan Thuy is now a key stop for migratory shorebirds from October to April. Bird-watching trips go out by boat, which you hire per boat at the park.
⏱ Time needed: full day
🎟 Ticket: free entry, boat hire per boat
🕗 Opening hours: daytime
📍 Distance: about 75 km from Ninh Binh city
Skip if you are not a birdwatcher. Best as a day trip from Ninh Binh city.
What to Do in Ninh Binh City
Ninh Binh city is mainly a base and a transport hub, and most of the famous sights are 6 to 20 km outside the city. Ninh Binh Railway Station is in the city centre, so many travellers spend one night in Ninh Binh city before heading to Tam Coc or Trang An.
What to See in Ninh Binh City
- Non Nuoc Mountain: a small hill by the Day River with old poems carved into the rock. Entry is free and the climb takes 15 minutes.
- Hoa Lu Old Quarter at night: a newer pedestrian area with lanterns, food stalls and live music in the evening.
- Local markets and goat restaurants: Ninh Binh is known for mountain goat, and the city has many family-run goat restaurants.
For evening ideas, see Ninh Binh at night.
Eat Like a Local in Ninh Binh
Three dishes define Ninh Binh. Mountain goat (de nui) is served grilled, steamed or as a salad with herbs and sesame rice paper. Crispy rice (com chay) is a crunchy rice cake topped with a meat sauce. Eel noodle soup (bun luon) is a warming breakfast in the cooler months. For where to eat, read what to eat in Ninh Binh.
Getting to Ninh Binh from Hanoi and Noi Bai Airport
Ninh Binh city is about 90 km south of Hanoi, and the trip takes around 2 hours by road or rail. The Hanoi to Ninh Binh travel page compares the train, bus and private car on one screen.
- By train: the Hanoi to Ninh Binh train runs from Hanoi Railway Station to Ninh Binh Railway Station in about 2 to 2.5 hours. The Hanoi to Ninh Binh train guide explains seat classes and how to book. For the return leg, see the Ninh Binh to Hanoi train.
- By bus: the Hanoi to Ninh Binh bus is the most flexible option, with limousine vans that drop you at your hotel in Tam Coc or Trang An.
- From Noi Bai Airport: travellers who land at Noi Bai International Airport can skip central Hanoi and take the Noi Bai Airport to Ninh Binh bus or the direct Noi Bai Airport to Tam Coc bus. The drive from Noi Bai to Ninh Binh takes about 2 hours.
For a full comparison of every option, read how to get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh.
Tours or DIY? How to Plan Your Days
A tour makes sense if you are on a day trip from Hanoi, travelling with young children or not comfortable riding a motorbike. Going on your own works better if you stay 2 nights or more, since you can visit Mua Cave at sunrise and Trang An before the crowds. Book tours through your hotel or a well-reviewed booking platform. A simple plan is Trang An, Hoa Lu and Mua Cave on day one, then Tam Coc, Bich Dong and cycling on day two. See how many days in Ninh Binh for full itineraries.
